If you're exploring smart lighting for your home, you'll quickly spot three names everywhere: Philips Hue, LIFX, and WiZ. All three work well, but they take different approaches to price, setup, and features. Here's what actually matters when you're comparing them.

Price: The Biggest Difference

WiZ is the cheapest option by a fair margin. You're looking at £8–15 per bulb for standard whites, sometimes less during sales. Colour bulbs sit around £20–30. You pay nothing extra for a hub; they connect directly to WiFi.

LIFX sits in the middle. Expect £15–25 for white bulbs, £30–50 for colour ones. Like WiZ, LIFX bulbs connect directly to WiFi without requiring a separate hub.

Philips Hue is the most expensive. Individual bulbs cost £20–35 for whites, £40–80 for colours. But here's the catch: you need the Hue Bridge (around £50–60 as a standalone purchase, though it's often bundled with starter kits). That bridge is the real expense when you're starting from scratch. A four-bulb Hue starter kit runs £100–150 upfront.

Money-wise: If you want cheap bulbs now and don't mind basic features, WiZ wins. If you want flexibility without a hub, LIFX is the middle ground. If you value stability and don't mind paying more, Hue's upfront cost pays back through features and longevity.

Hub Requirements

This is a genuine functional difference, not just marketing.

WiZ and LIFX both use direct WiFi. That sounds convenient, but it means your phone becomes the hub. If your WiFi struggles or you're far from the router, the connection gets iffy. Automations can be slower, and if your internet drops, you're relying on local fallbacks that aren't always reliable.

Philips Hue uses a dedicated bridge. It sits between your network and the bulbs, handling all the coordination locally. Automations trigger instantly without internet. Scene changes happen faster. If your WiFi dips, the Hue system keeps working. The bridge also doubles as a HomeKit hub if you use Apple's ecosystem, which is genuinely useful.

Practically speaking: WiZ and LIFX are fine for a small setup in a home with solid WiFi. Hue's bridge is worth the expense if you plan to expand beyond a handful of bulbs or care about fast, reliable automations.

Brightness and Colour Quality

All three deliver decent light, but there's real variation.

Philips Hue bulbs are the brightest. Standard white bulbs hit around 1600 lumens, and the top colour models reach 1000+ lumens in colour mode. Colour gamut is wide, though not perfect; you won't perfectly recreate every colour, but it's close.

LIFX colour bulbs are nearly as bright as Hue—often hitting 1100+ lumens—and some users prefer LIFX's colour palette. White bulbs are decent but not exceptional, typically around 1100–1400 lumens.

WiZ bulbs are dimmer. Standard whites max out around 800–1000 lumens, which is fine for ambient lighting but won't replace a regular bulb if you want real task lighting. Colour bulbs are acceptable but noticeably less bright than the other two.
